Bike lock test: which one really protects you from thieves?

Cycling is becoming an increasingly popular form of transport, especially around Lake Balaton, where the beautiful scenery, fresh air and long stretches of cycle paths attract cyclists. However, using a bike can bring not only pleasure but also challenges. One of the biggest problems is bike theft, which can happen anywhere and at any time. Nevertheless, using the right lock can significantly reduce the risk of theft.

There are many types and solutions to choose from in the bike lock market, but which one will really protect us from thieves? We've tested the most popular bike locks to help shoppers find the best one.

Cable locks: the cheapest, but the least reliable

Cable locks are perhaps the cheapest solution that provides basic protection. They are usually made of thin, bendable steel cable that can be attached to the bike frame or wheels. Their advantage is that they are easy to carry and convenient for everyday use, as they take up little space in the bag.

Their drawbacks: The security of cable locks is not outstanding. Cables are easily cut and thieves generally do not find the lock as challenging as other types. Therefore, cable locks should only be used if you park your bike for short periods of time, for example in a café or outside a shop, where you always keep an eye on it.

Recommendation: If it's only a short parking session and you want to avoid carrying an expensive padlock, a cable lock may be a good choice, but for longer parking sessions, don't leave your bike on it.

U-locks: the reliable choice

U-locks (also known as "O-locks") are one of the most popular and reliable types of bicycle lock. The U-shaped metal lever locks into a solid frame, usually protected by a strong steel insert. The best U-locks are made of stronger materials, and their locking mechanism is also difficult to attack because the entire lock is made of thick, solid metal.

Their advantages: U-locks are very strong and secure, making them the best choice if you need to leave your bike in public places for long periods of time. U-locks are not easy to pry or cut through and most thieves prefer to avoid those that require more effort.

Their drawbacks: Their main disadvantage is that they are relatively heavy and take up more space. They are less convenient if you need to store in a small space or if you want to carry the lock all the time.

Recommendation: The U-lock is the best choice if you want to leave your bike in a public place for a longer period of time. If you really want to be on the safe side, you should choose the best quality U-lock, even if it is a little more expensive.

Chain locks: combining flexibility and security

Chain locks combine the advantages of cable and U-locks. They consist of a strong chain and a single lock, and because they are flexible in the form of a chain, they are easier to adapt to different parking options. Chains are usually made of steel and the thicker types offer considerable protection.

Their advantages: Chain locks are convenient and flexible, as they can be easily adapted to different shapes. They are more secure than cable locks, but not as strong as U-locks.

Their drawbacks: If you choose a chain that is not of the best quality, it can still be easily cut through. It is important to choose a thick, high quality chain if safety is a priority.

Recommendation: If you are looking for a lock that is flexible but still secure enough, a chain lock may be the right choice. However, if you are parking in a public place for long periods of time, you should opt for a stronger type.

Smart locks: the technology of the future

The latest trend in the world of bike locks is smart locks. These locks use Bluetooth or other wireless technology and allow you to open and lock them with your smartphone. Smart locks are not only convenient, but some types also have GPS tracking functionality so you always know where your bike is.

Their advantages: Smart locks are equipped with the latest technology and provide extra convenience. GPS tracking allows you to track your stolen bike in case it is stolen.

Their drawbacks: Smart locks are more expensive and battery life can be limited. In addition, if your phone or smart lock battery runs out, you may have problems using the lock.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a state-of-the-art solution and don't mind a higher price tag, smart locks are definitely a worthy choice.

Which lock is the best choice?

Choosing the best lock always depends on the conditions in which the bike will be used. If you are parking for a short period and don't want to carry a heavy padlock, a cable or chain lock may be ideal. If you are parking for long periods or if you need more security, a U-lock is the best choice. Smart locks are the future, but if price is not an issue, a strong, good quality lock is always the safest choice.

Whatever lock you choose, always make sure you park your bike in a place where there is a chance of safe parking. Even the best lock won't help if the location is not secure. As well as the right lock, the most important thing is to always be vigilant and aware!
