Cycling to work? Tips for cycling in the city
More and more people are choosing to cycle to work rather than drive or use public transport - and for good reason. Cycling is not only faster than you think, it's a more energetic way to start the day and it's also better for the environment. If you're thinking of switching to two wheels for your morning rush, or if you're already a regular cyclist but want to make your commute even more practical, here are some useful tips!
Choose the right bike
You don't necessarily need an expensive sportsbike to get around town - the key is comfortable posture, a reliable gearbox, and the good quality lighting. A simple, sturdy city bike, with either a basket or a rack, can be the perfect companion for your daily commute. If your city is hillier, a electric e-bike can be of great help.
Get ready for the weather
One of the biggest challenges for urban cyclists is the weather. A raincoat, waterproof bag or a strap to hold down your trouser legs can be worth its weight in gold in a sudden downpour.
Tip: always have one with you spare socks and a wipesso that a little dampness doesn't spoil your mood!
Plan your route
You may not want to take the same route by bike as by car. Visit cycle-friendly streets, cycle paths, or quiet side streetswhere there is less traffic. It is worth trying several versions to find the most comfortable one.
Help: apps like Google Maps Bike View or Komoot can be useful for route planning.
Safety above all
In urban transport, it is essential to visibility and attention. Be well functioning front and rear lights, preferably also wear a reflective vest or clothing. Helmet use is not compulsory, but highly recommended - especially if you are driving on a busier road.
Think about parking
Have a secure place to store your bike at work. If there is no locked storage, use a strong one, U-shutter or chain, and preferably lock the frame as well as the wheel. If the office allows it, ask if you can bring your bike into the building.
Don't forget: you can also look stylish on a bike
Many people don't cycle to work because they are afraid of arriving sweaty or wrinkled. Good news: with the right clothing, a change of top and a little forethought, this is easily manageable.
Tip: if the journey is not too long, you can cycle comfortably and change into more formal clothes at the office. A small bag or laptop bag can carry all the essentials.
